What's the point of branding?

What’s the point of branding? Do I need a brand? Is branding really important? Keep watching to find out more.

What’s the point of branding?

If you’re doing business online or promoting yourself online, you probably have seen blog posts and videos on branding.

But is it really important? The short answer is yes, but I’m going to give a short, long answer instead by starting off asking ‘what’s branding?’.

What is branding?

Branding is the perception that your audience has about your business, your products, or you as a person.

In short, no matter if you have an established brand or not, you’re still being branded.

Even though we like to think otherwise, looks matter. You’re always going to be judged by your appearance first. That’s exactly why branding is important.

Branding basics

So what helps create your brand or the way people perceive you? That’s your brand identity.

It consists of your logo, icons, typography, the colors you use, your web design, images you use, and your voice, which is both the way you speak and the way you write.

These elements are the basics of branding. By choosing the right colors, language, and other elements, you can attract your ideal target audience.

On the other hand, you know your brand isn’t working if it’s not attracting your ideal target audience or their perception of you is the opposite of what you want.

For example, did you know that the color blue is an appetite suppressant? If you’re in food service, you probably want to avoid the color.

BUT, if you’re in the business of helping people lose weight, this might be a great color. I wonder if that’s why My Fitness Pal and Weight Watchers use the color blue.

Building your brand online (the secret to branding)

Now that you know what branding is and how brand identity helps in establishing a brand, what’s the point of branding.

Well, there’s a lot of reasons, but I’m just going to focus on 2 reasons.

#1, branding builds loyalty and trust. If your audience believes that you’re like them, then they’ll gradually trust you and loyally buy from you instead of your competitors.

#2, branding increases your authority and credibility. This one is kind of obvious. We’ve all clicked on a link to a website that looks sketchy. I mean when you see it, you would at least hesitate to buy something from them because you think that they’ll scam you.

None of those sites have great branding. All the big-name businesses have professional branding. Chanel, Nike, ABC, Target, and even celebrities have professional websites.

Recap

If there’s one thing I want you to take from branding, it would be that branding builds recognition and helps you stand out online.

The secret to building a recognizable brand is being consistent. Use your brand elements on your website, your social media channels, your YouTube channel, on your products and whatever you create. Just keep consistent.

Then one day, your audience will be able to recognize your content and products by your brand elements.
