Why building a brand is just as important as creating videos

Are you a content creator who doesn’t have a brand? Well, building a brand is just as important as creating videos. Why is building a brand important? Creating videos for YouTube is part of branding and having a brand helps you create content. Keep watching to find out why building a brand is important, how branding can help you create better videos, and where you should start on your branding journey.

Why building a brand is just as important as creating videos

01. Why building a brand is important

The first thing we’re going to talk about is why building a brand is important. A few weeks ago, I was on a discovery call with someone who wanted to find a direction for their channel. She was a content creator, but she wasn’t a business. She just wanted to grow her audience and monetize her channel. Her goal was to create lifestyle videos and she said she wanted to do it for people in their 20s. She didn’t know exactly who her audience was, she just knew they were in their early 20s.

But the problem was she didn’t have a brand. Having a brand would’ve helped her with all the problems she was having with her Youtube channel. Branding would help her find a tone and style for her YouTube channel and her YouTube videos. It would help her know exactly who her target audience was.  And once she knew who her target audience was, she would know what type of videos to create for them.

Having a brand will also help her stand out from all her competitors, especially since she was trying to build a lifestyle channel. When you’re in a saturated niche like lifestyle, having a brand will help you narrow down your topics, your goals, and your content ideas for your audience.

02. How branding can help you create better videos

How can branding help you create better content? Using the example of the content creator I was talking about just now, she was creating lifestyle videos and she was just posting random videos. None of the videos had a specific target audience in mind, and that’s because she really didn’t know anything about her audience.

Having a specific target audience in mind would help her know exactly what her audience wants to watch. Knowing what her audience wants to watch will help her get an idea of what content ideas she should create because she knows what her audience wants to watch. Not only would knowing her audience help her generate content ideas, but it will also help her figure out the tone and style she wants to set for her channel and her video.

So let’s say she was creating videos on dating, on beauty, on places, and just life in general. What if her audience was specifically interested in dating? If we use dating as the main idea, she could create beauty videos on dating, makeup ideas for dates, the best places to go for dates, how to know the right person when you’re on a date, outfits for dates, and so on, See how knowing your audience will create a niche geared towards their interests? Now, instead of having a general topic on dating, traveling, beauty, and fashion, it’s all specifically about dating. She’s focused on what her audience wants to watch instead of the general, random ideas she was creating before.

03. Where should you start on your branding journey?

The last thing I want to talk about is where you should start on your branding journey. The first thing you need to do is set goals for your business or your YouTube channel. The next thing you need to do is find out who your target audience is. You want to think about who you want to help, who are these videos for, or who can you help? What are you passionate about or who are you passionate about helping?

The third thing you want to think about is the tone you want to set for your channel and your videos? Are you going to create educational videos? Are you going to have a more casual style or are you going to have a professional style? There are so many styles to choose from. There’s the big sister/brother tone, BFF, professor, and more.

Before you set the tone, you want to think about your target audience and the goals for your business. Don’t just think, ‘oh, I want to be casual’ or ‘oh, I’m a business, I want to be professional’ because maybe there’s a middle ground for professional and casual. Just because you’re a business doesn’t mean you have to be so stuffy. Make sure you know your business goals first and who you want to help before you decide on that tone that you want to set for your videos.

After that, you want to think about your competitors. How are you standing out from them? What are they doing compared to you? What are their strengths and weaknesses and what are your strengths and weaknesses? Maybe their weaknesses are your strengths, and that’s how you can stand out.

You really need to think about who your competitors are and what type of videos they’re creating and then see how you can stand out from them.

All these things I just talked about are topics I discuss in the email course I mentioned earlier. If you need help finding your style, check out The Ultimate Roadmap to Discover Your Brand Style.
