How to build your brand on YouTube

A few weeks ago, in the video ‘Why your business should be on YouTube’, I talked about the many goals that your business has when it comes to marketing and growing your business.

Some of those goals include building brand awareness, building authority, and building a community. Basically, if your goal is to become more visible online and get more clients, here’s how to build your brand on YouTube.

Branding 101

First, we’re going to start with basic branding. I’m not going to go into great detail because I already talked about this last week.  If you missed it, check out ‘What’s the point of branding?’ here.

Even though YouTube isn’t owned by you, you can still brand it to fit your business. Branding will help you stand out online against your competitors. You might be thinking, ‘Oh, so and so, is already creating the type of content I want to create’ but you have to realize that everyone has different strong points.

Your brand, your style, your voice, and the way you explain things might appeal to some people more than your competitors. That’s how branding will set you apart. So make sure you use your brand colors, your brand fonts, your voice, and other elements consistently so that your audience gets used to you and easily recognizes your brand. That means not only using your brand elements on your channel but using them in your videos too.

Branding on another level

Now we’re going to talk about branding on another level. Branding isn’t just about your logo, your colors, your fonts, icons, imagery, and voice. It’s also about your processes and systems, and your personality. Since we’re specifically talking about video and YouTube, I’m going to talk about your video process and the personality and style you portray on camera.

You might not be aware of this, but almost all television and radio programs are scripted. I don’t mean that everything is word for word, but there is a format that all programs follow. Everything has a beginning, middle, and end.

Having a script is essential to building your brand on YouTube because you want to follow a format. When you follow a format, your audience will always know what to expect even though each show will be different. This is part of branding. I’ll talk more about creating a script in a future video.

Next, I want to touch on your voice or personality. The way you talk, the way you dress, and your word choices are all a part of your brand. For example, if you’re a Lawyer who educates professionals, you’ll have more of a serious tone and use polite language rather than casual language. You’ll definitely avoid improper language. On camera, you’ll always look put together and wear business attire. I’ll get into this more next week when I talk about personal branding.
