Are you camera shy? Learn how to talk to the camera in just one minute a day. You might think being in front of the camera is just not for you. But, it’s possible. I used to be the same way. I used to hide from the camera all the time.
Did you know that if someone was filming me, I would literally start twitching and shaking in front of the camera? Yes, it’s true! Being on camera made me uncomfortable. But, look at me now. I’m sitting here talking in front of the camera. Still awkward, but I’ve made a lot of progress.
So, if you want to learn how to get used to being in front of the camera, how to feel confident on camera, and how to talk to the camera, keep watching because I’m going to touch on each of these topics.
Camera shy?! Learn how to talk to the camera (in just a minute a day)
01. How to get used to the camera
The first thing you need to do before you learn how to talk to the camera is how to get used to the camera. Let’s talk about selfies. Are you used to taking pictures of yourself with your cell phone? Are you used to taking selfies? If not, take one. When you took it, did you like it? Did you not like it? What didn’t you like about your selfie?
Usually, people take a lot of selfies before they can pick one they like. If you’re not comfortable taking selfies, practice. Change the angle. Take a selfie with the camera up, down, straight on, to the side, in portrait, and in landscape. Experiment. You’re bound to find an angle you like.
You won’t become a pro until you experience taking a hundred selfies yourself. Take note of the angles and styles you like. I know you’re probably thinking ‘why is she making me take selfies’? These selfies are going to help you later when you start filming.
02. How to feel confident on camera
The 2nd thing you need to do before you learn how to talk to the camera is learning how to feel confident on camera. I’ve actually talked about this in a couple of videos, but how you look is how you feel. If you want to feel confident on camera then wear something that makes you feel confident.
The first thing you need to think about is your outfit. Wear an outfit that fits the style of the video that you want to create. Something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. That makes you feel good on camera or just makes you feel like you rule the world.
When you go outside, what outfit makes you feel like you’re going to rule the world? Wear that outfit. Same thing for your hairstyle and your makeup.
Another thing that will make you feel confident is knowing what you’re talking about. Always have a script. I’m not going to go into too much detail because I’ve talked about it so many times in other videos (GET CONFIDENT CREATING VIDEOS (even when you’re camera shy), HOW TO CREATE VIDEOS WITHOUT BEING ON CAMERA, PRACTICE BEING ON CAMERA | Learn how to get more comfortable on camera, HOW TO GET MORE CONFIDENT ON VIDEO (or at least be less awkward), HOW TO WRITE YOUTUBE SCRIPTS FOR BETTER ENGAGEMENT). But of course, having a script will make you feel confident because you will know what to talk about. You won’t go off topic and forget what you’re supposed to talk about on camera. If you need a script template, then you can grab your free copy from here.
Before we get to the last topic, let me know in the comments below what you think about being in front of the camera.
03. How to talk to the camera
Now you finally get to learn how to talk to the camera. Earlier I mentioned taking selfies. You’re going to use what you learned and implement it when you film. You should already know what angle makes you look best.
I’m going to focus on making talking head videos. The videos I make are talking head videos. They’re videos where you’re talking to the audience. You see them on Youtube, Instagram, webinars, live videos, and so on.
When you’re making talking head videos, I want you to imagine you’re having a conversation with your friend. When you’re talking to your friend, you’re usually looking them in the eyes. That’s respectful, right? The eyes that you’re looking at are the camera lens. When you’re filming videos, make sure you’re looking at the camera lens, not at the screen.
Summary x Homework
Now, it’s time for homework. You didn’t think this was over, right? I promised you would learn how to talk to the camera in just a minute a day. Your homework is to talk to the camera for one minute a day. It can be on any topic. In fact, the first video can be an introduction. You can introduce yourself and post these videos to Instagram stories. When you post to Instagram stories, your video will disappear after 24 hours. So your dark path will be erased after one day. Isn’t that great?
But if you like the videos you create, you can post them anywhere and keep them. You can post them on YouTube. Instagram, Facebook, or Tik Tok. For a minute a day create a video on any topic. The first video is an introduction. If you’re posting to Instagram Stories, you can tag me @paigondavis. I’d love to watch your video.
That’s it. If you’re camera shy you can learn how to talk to the camera by getting used to the camera, getting comfortable on camera, and actually talking to the camera.
Just so you know, every day that you practice you will get better and better. You won’t get comfortable talking to the camera if you don’t practice. So do the homework so you can get better, and don’t forget to use the tips I talked about to feel confident talking to the camera.
